Beyond the Military: The ASVAB Opens Doors to Graduation and Careers

Often Misunderstood: The ASVAB Test Supports Graduation and Career Exploration

This past week, Pickerington High School North (PHSN) and Pickerington High School Central (PHSC) administered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test to more than 60 students in grades 10–12.

The ASVAB is a free assessment designed to evaluate student potential, strengths, and aptitude. It also provides personalized career information that can help students explore possible future pathways. After results are received, high school counselors meet with students to review their scores and connect them with a career interest inventory program, which remains accessible for two years.

“While the ASVAB is used by the military as a prerequisite for enlistment, taking the exam does not require the student to be connected with or to enlist into the military,” explained PHSN School Counselor Eric Rutter, MD-SC. “In addition to providing a score for military enlistment if desired, the ASVAB also provides students with additional opportunities for graduation such as the ability to meet graduation seal requirements and honors diploma requirements.”

Pickerington High School North and Central offer the ASVAB twice a year — in the fall and spring — at no cost to students. Families interested in the Spring 2026 session should reach out to their student’s school counselor for more information.
