About the Board of Education
The Pickerington Schools Board of Education serves as the governing body of the District. It is made up of five residents elected at large to serve four-year terms. Each January, the Board holds an organizational meeting to elect its president and vice president for the calendar year.
The school board is the legal entity responsible for implementing the state of Ohio's requirements pertaining to public education. Board members adopt policy and oversee the school district's policy manual.
Board members do not manage the day-today operations of our school district; they hire the superintendent and treasurer to do that. All board of education policies can be found on the BoardDocs site. If you do not find the policy you are trying to reference, contact the Chief Administrative Officer at 614-920-6104.
The Board of Education is legally responsible for:
- Developing necessary policies and regulations for the governance of the school district.
- Ensuring students are provided with high quality educational opportunities.
- Appointing a superintendent of schools and investing such powers in the superintendent as may be legally delegated.
- Appointing a treasurer.
- Acting on personnel and policies recommended by the superintendent.
- Seeing that the annual budget is prepared and acted on.
- Passing an annual appropriations measure.
- Annually adopting a master calendar.
- Entering into contracts with all personnel in the manner required by Ohio laws.
- Levying taxes with a vote of the people to maintain schools.
Board Executive Sessions
Ohio law mandates that school board meetings be open to the public, except for executive sessions. In an executive session, the Board may discuss but not vote on:
- The appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion or compensation of an employee or official, or the investigation of charges against an employee or official, or regulated individual requests a public hearing;
- The purchase of property for public purposes or the sale of property at competitive bidding;
- Disputes which are the subject of pending or imminent court action in conference with an attorney;
- Preparing for, conducting or reviewing negotiations or bargaining sessions with employees;
- Matters that are required to be kept confidential by federal or state statutes;
- Specialized details of security arrangements or emergency response.
